Director IDs have arrived

From November 2021 Australian company directors are required to apply for a director identification number (Director ID).

A director identification number is a unique identifier that you will keep forever.

Applying for a director ID is free and you can do so from 1 November 2021.

You will need to apply for the director ID yourself, as we cannot do so on your behalf, even if we act as the registered ASIC agent for your company.

Who needs a director ID?

You need to apply if you are a director or an alternate director acting in that capacity for:

  • a company, a registered Australian body or a registered foreign company under the Corporations Act 2001 (Corporations Act)
  • an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation registered under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (CATSI Act).

Director ID

How do you apply?

If you have a smart device the process should be fairly quick.

You will need to first get a myGovID. You will need either Standard or Strong identity strength.

Identity strength refers to the number and type of documents used to verify your identity.

Please note myGovID is not the same as myGov.

To set up your myGovID or to find out more about it, click here.

Once you have a myGovID you can move on to creating a director ID.

You will be required to verify your ATO record and then answer some simple questions about yourself, such as place of birth, address and phone number.

What do I do with it?

Once you have completed the process make sure you save a copy! You will need to pass this on to the record holder of any companies you are a director for.

If we act as ASIC registered agent for your company please forward the number to us using myprosperity. We will add your director ID to your record in our system.

For instructions on uploading to myprosperity please click here.

If you forgot to save a copy – don’t panic! You can retrieve it by following the prompts in the Manage Your Director ID section of the ABRS website.
